Position Summary:

Be responsible for the overall safety and well-being of all campers to provide a safe, nurturing and educational environment for all the campers.

Essential Functions:

  • Possess a current ARC CPR as well as First Aid certification.
  • Knowledgeable of the emergency procedures set forth by the YMCA.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The ability to articulate and model YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are essential.
  • Excellent human relation skills and communication skills.
  • Sensitive and a caring interest in young children.
  • Maturity as demonstrated by dependability and ability to relate well with children, parents and staff.
  • Report to work on time.
  • Be responsible for the scheduling of activities and supervision of a Unit of campers (grades 1& 2, 3 &4, 5 & 6).
  • Plan, organize and implement procedures of safety, fairness and sensitivity to the experience of the campers involved.
  • Assume all responsibilities of a Counselor for a small group of children (max 12)
  • Address parent questions and concerns.
  • Plan and implement a unit program in line with the day camp program goals and objectives.
  • Supervise the Counselors in each Unit (as well as CIT’s when applicable.)
  • Attend all pre-camp orientation sessions.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Be responsible for camper orientation on Monday mornings.
  • Implement a daily review of camp rules and emergency procedures for the Unit.
  • Maintain equipment and cleanliness at camp site, including parks, bus and pool and YMCA building.
  • Perform Buddy Checks every hour or 15 minutes at water activities.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must have one year of college and/or equivalent experience supervising children the age attending camp and/or training in the related field.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas are preferred: aquatics, drama, music, nature, arts and crafts, or sports and games.

Physical Demands:

This work may be performed indoors and outdoors and may require any one or more of the following physical activities: swimming, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, and/or visual acuity. Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time and not become distracted.
