POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor at SRYMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swim classes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs individualized swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA/ARC guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members or program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
  • Ability to assess, evaluate and assist in promoting swim participants advancement through progressive levels.
  • Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
  • Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance/schedule tracking form).
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and our three areas of focus: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
  • Ability to articulate and model the Y’s four core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Wears required and approved uniform items at all times.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • one (1) year experience in instructing youth lessons
  • YMCA/ARC Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certifications required
  • Must be able to demonstrate youth progressive swimming skills proficiently in accordance with YMCA standards
  • At least 17 years of age

  • This work is primarily performed indoors and may require any the ability to remain standing and moving for extended periods of time; bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, standing, walking, running, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and/or visual acuity.
  • Recognize distress signals and/or noises in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Must possess the ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high.
