Free Swim Lessons for Corinth 2nd Graders Through Saratoga Regional YMCA Partnership
The Saratoga Regional YMCA is excited to announce its partnership with the Corinth Central School District to provide free swim lessons to all second-grade students within the district this spring. This seven-week program, which is currently in its fifth week, is designed to teach children valuable water safety skills and swimming techniques, benefiting children of all skill levels.
Through this collaboration, families will receive a free membership to the Y for the duration of the program, offering them the opportunity to enjoy additional health and fitness benefits beyond swim lessons. The lessons cover a wide range of skills, from basic water safety to more advanced swimming strokes, ensuring that every child gains confidence in the water.
Drowning is the second leading cause of death for kids ages 5–14, and 60% of kids who drown are within 10 feet of safety. “We’re proud to work with the Corinth Central School District to offer this valuable program that will help save lives,” said Steve Butler, Associate Vice President of the Glens Falls and Saratoga Springs branches. “We believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn skills that will keep them safe in and around water, and this partnership is making it accessible to all second graders in the Corinth Central School District.”
The program has impacted 67 children, providing them with crucial water safety knowledge and the ability to enjoy swimming as both a fun and life-saving skill. Students began the program with a swim assessment to ensure they were placed in the appropriate class level, and over the course of the program, each child has been developing important life skills that will stay with them for years to come.
“We deeply value our strong partnership with the Saratoga Regional YMCA. Providing our second-grade students with swim lessons not only gives them essential water safety skills but also promotes their overall wellbeing,” said Mark Stratton, Superintendent of Schools of the Corinth Central School District. “This opportunity is helping to ensure our students are safer and more confident in and around water, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support and collaboration of the Y.”
“This program has been a source of immense joy and enthusiasm for our second graders. We eagerly anticipate continuing our participation in the years ahead,” said Ashley Connor, Elementary Principal, Corinth Central School District.
The swim lessons are expected to wrap up in late spring, with many participants gaining new skills and a greater sense of confidence in the water just in time for the summer season in upstate NY.
